Molecular rods of Platinum(II) with R-C^N^C end-capped ligands

Alkynyl chemistry of platinum(II) has been widely explored, with special attention being paid to molecular rod oligomers and polymers.1 The main advantages of these materials are their rigid structure, linear geometry, delocalized π-system and the accessibility of the triplet excited state. These properties make them promising materials for molecular wires, LEDs, optical power limiters and solar cells.2
Herein, we report the preparation of new rigid rod diplatinum(II) complexes containing the tridentate bis-cyclometalated R-C^N^C ligands [R= EtOOC (Ethyl 2,6-diphenylisonicotinate); R= H (2,6-diphenylpyridinate)] as “end-capped” groups. 1,4-diethynylbenzene, [1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(ethoxycarbene) and 4-ethynylpyridine act as bridging ligands in the corresponding homodianionic dialkyne complexes (PPN)2[{(R-C^N^C)Pt}2(1,4-C≡C-C6H4-C≡C)] (R= COOEt (1); R= H (2)), the neutral alkoxyalkycarbene compound [{(EtO2C-C^N^C)Pt}2(=C(OEt)-CH2-C6H4-CH2-(OEt)C=)] (3) and the monoanionic derivative PPN[{(EtOOC-C^N^C)Pt}2(μ-C≡C-C5H4N)] (4). Photophysical and computational studies have been performed on them, revealing the spectroscopic effects of the substituent (EtOOC-) on the tridentated C^N^C ligand
